The Baby-Sitters are Back!

The Baby-Sitters are Back!

From Stieg Larsson to Tolstoy to Ann M. Martin of “The Baby-Sitters Club” fame, we’ve got our genres (and centuries) covered in today’s news.  It may be the first time Tolstoy and “The Baby-Sitters Club” were discussed so close together…

  • Stieg Larsson’s final work, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, doesn’t come out until May, but Omnivoracious is already buzzing (pun intended) about it in its “Omni Daily Crush.”  Blogger Dave Callanan discusses the book’s highlights (without giving anything away), and says, “It was tough to turn the final page, but Larsson definitely saved his thrilling best for last.”  If you liked The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire, you will love the trilogy’s bittersweet finale.
  • It seems that everyone loves Tolstoy except…Russia?  This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the writer’s death, and American and British filmmakers have responded by creating The Last Station, a film about the final years of Tolstoy’s life.  Countries around the world plan to release the film, with the surprising exception of Tolstoy’s native Russia.  The Guardian asks why, offering insight into both the film and Russia’s lukewarm feelings toward its heralded author.
  • Good news for tweens and nostalgic twenty-somethings everywhere!  Scholastic will be republishing the first two volumes of its hit series “The Baby-Sitters Club” this spring, updated for today’s pre-teens. Shelf Life has more details on the arrangement, including how the publisher plans to deal with the characters’ 1980s technology (and hopefully hairstyles).
