Apparently the pop-ups are more exciting than the cover.

Pop-ups!  Paper dolls!  Superheroes!  And no, this post isn’t all about kids.  Luckily for adults everywhere, publishers have realized that pop-ups and graphic novels never cease to entertain, and they’re churning them out for readers of all ages.  Unfortunately, we don’t have this same technology, so you’ll have to read today’s news in boring black-and-white…

  • In its weekly kid-lit roundup, Omnivoracious features the 1942 classic The Christmas Manger (complete with paper doll nativity characters) and Buzz Aldrin’s gorgeous picture book Look to the Stars. The blog also introduces flashcards that are actually fun and links to the Guardian’s “Feminist books for five-year-olds” roundup.  From space lovers to flashcard fanatics, you’ll get ideas for all the kids on your list.
  • Think graphic novels are all about superheroes, fantasy, and sci-fi?  Well, most of them are, but author Harriet Reisen–who says her ” heart belongs to women’s stories about their own flawed selves and their tribulations in the big bad world”–introduces us to graphic novels with realistic, modern-day heroines as part of NPR’s “Three Books” series.  Reisen selects three diverse, female-centric graphic novels, and asks for reader suggestions in return.
  • You’re never too old for pop-ups with Roland Lewis’ impressive new book, Frank Lloyd Wright in Pop-Up.  With Lewis’ detailed spreads, you can bring the Guggenheim into your living room and study three-dimensional images of Wright’s architecture from your couch.  Carolyn Kellogg of the Los Angeles Times says, “Terraces, overhangs, glass corners and additional details surge off the page,” but she wishes the book included more than five fold-out pages.  In the choice between quality and quantity, the book skimps on the latter, making it hard to justify its specialty-book price.
