A Plump and Perky Turkey
Now that the holiday season has officially begun, we have gift book suggestions for you and a list of best Thanksgiving picture books. And for fun, a quiz on “The first world war in fiction” – how well do you remember fiction’s war plots and heroes?
- In case your kids are wondering why they got the day off school to eat turkey, teaching website apples4theteacher features a compilation of favorite Thanksgiving books that will educate (and entertain) them. Classics include The Night Before Thanksgiving and Clifford’s Thanksgiving Visit, and educational titles cover everything from the Mayflower to Plymouth Rock. Each featured book includes a brief description so you know what to expect.
- World War I appears in fiction from Earnest Hemingway to this year’s Booker shortlist, so the Guardian has developed a quiz to test your “first world war in fiction” knowledge. The questions cover well-known titles like All Quiet on the Western Front in addition to more obscure war stories. Historians might do okay on the quiz, but it’s more a test of your literary recall. Good luck!
- NPR celebrates gift and coffe-table books–as opposed to the ubiquitous mass market paperbooks and e-books–in its guide “Big and Beautiful: Best Gift Books of 2009.” Not all of the books weigh twenty pounds, but they’re all rich with color and information. Topics range from science to fashion, so there’s an option for everyone on your list (assuming they haven’t gone completely digital).
