Teen Read Week: Meet the Tough Girls Ruling the Bestseller List

by BNA_Daily on October 20, 2009

Move over Bella! Readers are falling for Katniss and Fire, the heroines of two current bestsellers that aren’t afraid to fight (in some cases, to the death) for what they believe in. In honor of Teen Read Week, we wanted to highlight these young women and the exciting novels they star in.  Chances are, you or a teen in your life has read Suzanne Collins or Kristin Cashore before, but if not, read below to see what all the buzz is about!

KATNISS – Protagonist of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games and its sequel Catching Fire

Katniss Everdeen is someone you don’t want to mess with.  In The Hunger Games, her unmatched survival and hunting skills left her the victor in a fight-to-the-death reality show sponsored by her country’s government. Now, she’s enjoying the fame and wealth brought by the show, but must live in fear of government retaliation (she didn’t always play by the rules).  Katniss’s world is foreign, but she comes through as a fully-realized, relatable character, who even falls victim to crushes amid all the fighting.

“As in The Hunger Games, Katniss is a sympathetic, credible, and fully dimensional hero. The plot is heady, thrilling, and dangerous.” – Terry Miller Shannon, YABooksCentral.com

FIRE – Protagonist of Kristin Cashore’s Fire (prequel to Graceling)

Fire is the last surviving human monster in the kingdom of Dell, an area located just over the mountains from Graceling‘s Seven Kingdoms. “Cursed” with irresistible beauty, Fire must help her kingdom avoid war and live with the vulnerability caused by her looks. Many fans of Graceling were disappointed to hear that Fire would be a prequel rather than sequel, but since Fire‘s release concerns have quieted down. Kristin Cashore delivers another feisty, compelling heroine that draws readers into her world.

“Cashore wove her storytelling magic, her prose more fluid and assured in this book, and I was her prisoner by the second chapter.” – Lynn Rutan, Booklist Online
