Harry Bosch just keeps getting better

On Tuesday, Michael Connelly’s latest installment of the Harry Bosch series, Nine Dragons, released to an onslaught of rave reviews.  In this book, the 15th in the Harry Bosch drama, Bosch must deal with his normally locked up emotional side while investigating a case that takes him to Hong Kong.  This time, it’s impossible for Bosch to set feelings aside while doing his job – the mystery involves his daughter, who has been kidnapped.  The emotional component of the case is eliciting praise from reviewers, who enjoy seeing a new side of the hardened detective.  They seem to agree that this novel delivers the suspense and action that Bosch fans expect while also taking the characterization and emotional response to a whole new level.  If you’re a suspense fan, you may want to cancel your plans for the weekend, because this is a must-read.

“Though Connelly remains a master at detailing the intricacies of ‘the job,’ it is Harry’s longing for reunion and connection with his ex-wife and daughter, the overwhelming vulnerability he feels as a father, that makes Nine Dragons another standout in the series that should satisfy all readers.” – Paula Woods, Los Angeles Times

The Bosch revealed in Nine Dragons [...] is vulnerable, a twist that makes him both deeper and more human.” – Robin Vidimos, The Denver Post

To see a detective so adept at holding it together suddenly come apart, to see Bosch’s hard, straight-line world disintegrate into a mushy tangle, is to feel as shocked and adrift as he is.” – Julia Keller, Chicago Tribune

The jagged intersection between a cop’s personal and professional lives is a recurring theme in many crime novels, but never has it been portrayed with the razor-edge sharpness and psychological acuity that Connelly brings to the subject.” – Bill Ott, Booklist (starred review)
