Dan Brown is second only to wizards and NPR is giving fashion advice in today’s news. We’ll also fill you in on the Best of the National Book Award vote going on in honor of the award’s 60th anniversary. Enjoy, and have a good weekend!
Which of the National Book Award winners will be named best of the best?
- To nobody’s surprise, Dan Brown’s latest The Lost Symbol shattered first-day sales records for adult books when it released on Tuesday (Harry Potter still takes the cake overall). Over 1 million copies sold, forcing the publisher to add to their already massive 5-million copy print run. Shelf Life has the details, including reactions from Barnes & Noble and Knopf Doubleday.
- In the same vein as last year’s “Best of the Booker” contest, the National Book Award is celebrating its 60th anniversary through a vote for the best National Book Award winner of all time. The Elegant Variation‘s Mark Vargas is getting in on the action, casting a vote for The Shipping News. The short list of 6 finalists will be released on Monday, and Paper Cuts has more details on the process.
- And just for fun, NPR‘s “Three Books” segment suggests “Three Books for Frugal Fashionistas.” The selections range from an introductory fashion book written for teens to the high fashion memoir of Diana Vreeland, former editor-in-chief of Vogue. Now you can look stylish while re-reading all of the National Book Award winners prior to voting.
