Forbidden love isn't just for vampires

Forbidden love isn't just for vampires

Super serious news today, with forbidden love, Michael Cera, and the mysterious allure of babysitters.  It’s Friday, so feel free to use these odd snippets as conversation starters all weekend long…

  • The next wave of bestselling romance books feature young heroines, forbidden love, and… buggies.  The Wall Street Journal ran an article this week about the rise of Amish romances.  Written by non-Amish women for a mainstream audience, the books are selling like crazy.  “Put a person with a bonnet or an Amish field in the background and it automatically starts to sell well,” Barnes & Noble book buyer Jane Love says.  Who knew?
  • In case you missed C.D. Payne’s 1993 young adult hit Youth in Revolt, you can experience it soon as a movie starring Michael Cera.  As the film Year One attests to, anything with Michael Cera in it is bound for greatness, and it will be nice to see a Y.A. book-turned-movie that doesn’t involve vampires.  Though there is some sci-fi in this, as Michael Cera plays both himself and a mustached alter ego.  Omnivoracious was kind enough to link to the trailer for a sneak peak.
  • The character of the babysitter has morphed over the years from the helpful neighborhood teen to the modern stereotype of jail bait and horror movie victim.  Intrigued by the babysitter’s rise in pop culture, history professor Miriam Forman-Brunell  has written Babysitter: An American History. According to Forman-Brunell, the book exposes “the underlying fear and fantasies that many adults share about teenage girls.”  The L.A. Times has more about the book and author.

Youth in Revolt is NOT a YA novel! It has NEVER been presented as such.
