Elizabeth Gilbert is back with a book about... marriage?

The independent traveler of Eat, Pray, Love is writing a book about marriage, Libba Bray is walking around New York City as a cow, and writers and publishers are about to engage in a “showdown” - has the literary world gone crazy?  You’ll just have to read more and find out.

  • Good news for the millions of Americans obsessed with Eat, Pray, Love and Elizabeth Gilbert - her next book, Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage,  is set to publish in January.  Gilbert describes the book as both a follow up to and a departure from Eat, Pray, Love.  While the story picks up a few months after the last book left off, the tone is a bit more scholarly as Gilbert explores the tradition of marriage from a sociological, historical, and personal standpoint.  The New York Times chats with Gilbert about the book (and its scrapped predecessor) in the article “Eat, Pray, Love. Then What? Get Married.”
  • Okay, so let’s just admit that most book trailers are a little cheesy with their background music and slow-motion zoom onto the cover.  Fortunately for Libba Bray fans, her latest trailer is the exception.  To promote her upcoming novel Going Bovine, the YA superstar parades through her publisher’s office and the streets of New York in a cow outfit.  Perhaps the best part is that she never acknowledges the costume and simply talks about how important her upcoming book will be to literature.  Shelf Life features the video along with some overall praise of Bray’s work.
  • The battle over Google Book Search keeps brewing as more and more people file copyright complaints before the October hearing.  The issue of making copyrighted books accessible via the internet has people worked up on both sides of the issue - while one side insists that information, including literature, should be accessible to all, others worry about the rights of authors being trampled on.  The Guardian has more on the issue,  including the description of literary folk on each side “lining up for a showdown.”  Let’s hope the only weapon they bring is their razor-sharp language skills.
