Recommended Reading from ALA Chicago Day One
Books & Authors’ first day at ALA Chicago – Mecca for anyone library-obsessed or even just library-curious – was a big success. Met tons of the most engaged, thoughtful book lovers you could ever imagine, watched crime icon James Ellroy give an adrenaline-soaked “declaration of war” against the digital age at the ALA auditorium speaker series (and snagged an advance copy of his new novel, Blood’s a Rover), marveled at the size of the line for the Neil Gaiman signing, and basically just came away with a very, very positive outlook on the future of the public library.
One of the highlights of ALA was running into one of Books & Authors’ most beloved subject matter experts, Pam Spencer Holley, who knows more about young adult literature than almost ANY young adult we’ve ever encountered. Pam is a Past-President of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a noted author, a former school librarian, and she’s one of the main people responsible for making sure that B&A covers YA literature and covers it right.
For any librarian, teacher, or just YA enthusiast who might be interested in benefitting from Pam’s experience – first, go to Books & Authors, and then grab a copy of Quick and Popular Reads for Teens, a fantastic anthology of essays and reading lists, edited by Pam, that really does an amazing job of breaking down how to help reluctant teen readers match exactly the right book to their various interests. Yes, we’re biased when it comes to Pam, but, honestly, this is a great, great resource for anyone trying to find the perfect book for a young adult. (You can buy a copy here.)
Looking forward to day two already.
