Was there ever a kid at your school who consistently wore wolf t-shirts, usually with a moon in the background? That's what this picture reminds me of.
Everyone knows that being green is super hip, so get caught reading a book about nature this summer! Margot Berwin’s much anticipated Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire released on Tuesday, with the Wall Street Journal calling it “one of this summer’s bigger literary debuts.” The book has elements of fantasy and magical realism with plants taking on various powers, which will no doubt be refreshing for those who prefer flowers to zombies. Inspired by the book’s creativity and emphasis on nature, we decided to search for other books where nature plays a prominent role. The following lists give recommendations for all reading levels. Even if you can’t escape the city this summer, these books will make nature come to you.
- This list, provided by Powell’s and Notes From the Windowsill, includes everything from board books to nonfiction chapter books about wolves. Favorites like Eric Carle are represented, but the list also includes picture books about bird nests, seasons, and shadows.
- A mix of fiction and nonfiction, this list from Eco Books gives a brief description of each title and includes classics like My Side of the Mountain. A nature-loving kid could stay busy all summer (and learn a lot!) with this assortment. And really, who wouldn’t want to read a book called Meet the Arthropods?
- The Sierra Club of Lexington, Kentucky has a book club, and they share their favorite nature-themed novels in this list. With authors like Wallace Stegner, Edward Abbey, and Barry Lopez, it’s enough to start your own book club, or at least have a literary discussion around the campfire.
