"I'm reading as fast as I can, Captain!"

With Star Trek and Wolverine dominating box office sales, it seems natural to dedicate a post to science fiction and fantasy.  Despite the recession (or perhaps because of it), thousands of Americans are spending money to escape into movies that take them out of this world.  Chances are many of these movie buffs are also fans of sci-fi and fantasy books (even if they won’t admit it), so we pulled together some reading lists to help them escape reality for a bit longer.

  • For the adult sci-fi reader, i09 offers this list of “The Twenty Science Fiction Novels that Will Change Your Life.” While we can’t guarantee any life-altering effects, the list is a helpful guide to finding a sci-fi classic when there are thousands of titles to choose from.  And if you’ve already read the twenty they mention, we bet you haven’t read all of the books The Guardian’s three-part list:  Part 1Part 2 Part 3
  • Young adults can find recommendations from the queen of YA fantasy, Tamora Pierce, at her website.  The site isn’t visually stunning, but she makes some solid recommendations and even suggests  books for teens crossing over into the adult market.
  • And let’s not forget about the fantasy-loving kids reading Harry Potter for the ninth time.  Laura Jones at the Sandy Library in Utah created this helpful list of not-so-obvious titles (complete with age recommendations and a fire-breathing dragon!).
