There's nothing ugly about the fifth Diary of a Wimpy Kid's 5-million copy print run.

In today’s news, read about the literary legacy of Sex and the City, check out the Southern California Independent Booksellers Association award finalists, and learn which classic picture book is becoming a movie.

  • Candace Bushnell’s Sex in the City may have deteriorated into a horrible movie sequel, but it inspired a huge shift in women’s literature along the way.  The Observer‘s Elizabeth Day discusses how Candace Bushnell’s bestselling phenomenon led to the confessional style of writers like Emily Gould, Meghan Daum, and Sloane Crosley. Day writes, “Before Candace Bushnell, books like Gould’s that sought to capture the dilemmas and dichotomies of modern womanhood with a wry, humorous honesty, were almost unheard of.”
  • If you’re looking for a few more books to read before the end of summer, check out the finalists for the 2010 Southern California Independent Booksellers Association awards. Jacket Copy discusses the fiction and nonfiction finalists (which include bestsellers The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake and Tattoos on the Heart, respectively) and lists the nominees in all six categories.
  • This week’s Omnivoracious kid-lit roundup features tons of children’s book news, from the upcoming Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day movie to the five-million copy print run set for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth.  The post also links to a Publishers Weekly report on comics promoting literacy in young boys and a Comic-Con children’s lit slideshow.
