One million people are ready for a zombie attack...are you?

One million people are ready for a zombie attack...are you?

If you don’t read today’s news, you may miss the best books of 2010 or get eaten in the zombie apocalypse.  So keep reading…

  • Over the weekend, the Los Angeles Times reported on Scholastic’s recent success in introducing classic children’s books to the Arabic market.  Carol Sakoian, a Vice President at Scholastic, began the mission several years ago by meeting with education ministers from Jordan, Lebanon, and Bahrain–together, they agreed on 80 books to translate, and today over 17 million copies have been shipped to elementary schools in the Middle East and North Africa.  Check out the article to find out what books made the cut, and what Scholastic hopes to achieve with the project.
  • In case you’ve already plowed through your summer reading books (or you’re just looking ahead to fall), the Millions continues its “Great 2010 Book Countdown” with a list of titles set to release later this year.  Authors include Jonathan Franzen, Milan Kundera, Tom Clancy, Michael Cunningham, Philip Roth, Nicole Krauss, Rick Moody, and many, many more.  Good luck deciding which to read first!
  • Recently, Max Brooks’ The Zombie Survival Guide sold its 1 millionth copy (that means at least 1/300th of the US population will know what to do during the zombie apocalypse).  To celebrate, Shelf Life talked to Brooks (who happens to be both a former SNL writer and the son of Mel Brooks) about how he came up with the book and what made it spread like wildfire.  Needless to say, the interview’s pretty funny.
