- Dame Beryl Bainbridge, acclaimed British novelist and short story writer, died of cancer on July 2nd. Over her forty-year career, Bainbridge won the Guardian prize for fiction and two Whitbread awards, and she made the Booker prize short list five times. Bainbridge was known for using her own painful experiences as inspiration, and her style was concise and powerful. - And to darken the mood a little more, check out the trailer for Lovesick, the next novel in Tonya Hurley’s “Ghostgirl” series, on Shelf Life. The trailer is both intriguing and a little creepy, and it looks surprisingly good for a book trailer. Teen “Ghostgirl” fans will definitely want to take a look.
- Watch out Best American Stories, there’s a new anthology in town–Becoming Americans: Four Centuries of Immigrant Writing from the Library of America features work from 85 writers who immigrated to America. Authors range from contemporary favorites like Junot Diaz, Edwidge Danticat, and Jamaica Kinkaid to classic writers like Thomas Mann and Vladimir Nabokov.
