This fall, Updike will have his very own literary conference
With John Updike, the World Cup, and Martin Scorsese, today’s news is particularly star studded, but you won’t find it on TMZ.
- Calling all Updike scholars! This fall, the first ever John Updike Conference will be held in Reading, Pennsylvania, sponsored by Alvernia University and the John Updike Society. The conference will feature a keynote address by Ann Beattie, who will discuss Updike’s short fiction. There will also be a historical tour of the area, which serves as the setting for Updike’s “Rabbit” novels. Check out Jacket Copy for more information.
- If little ones are asking you more World Cup questions than you can answer, this week’s Omnivoracious “Kid Lit Roundup” suggests some soccer books to help kids (and you!) understand all aspects of the game. The roundup also discusses the new Glee book series for teens (based on the TV show) and links to a list of “Best of the Best” children’s books created by experts at Bank Street College.
- Turning a good novel into a successful movie isn’t easy, but Dennis Lehane–author of Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, and Shutter Island (just to name a few)–knows a thing or two about the process. In an interview with Shelf Life, Lehane talks about maintaining consistency between the book and film versions, and he admits just how thrilled he was to work with Martin Scorsese: “I didn’t even tell anybody but my wife for several weeks because I was so embarrassed by my good fortune.”
