The fifth "Wimpy Kid" book hits stores November 9th

Today’s news discusses the “Lost Man Booker Prize,” when to expect the next “Wimpy Kid” novel, and George Washington’s delinquent borrowing habits.

  • Finally, the moment authors published in 1970 have been waiting for–the “Lost Man Booker Prize” winner was announced yesterday. Troubles by J.G. Farrell beat out five other 1970s novels for the prize, which commemorates the 40-year anniversary of the year the Booker forgot.  Due to a change in eligibility rules, the Booker committee didn’t judge any books written in 1970, so they’re making up for lost time with this commemorative award (voted on by the public).  Omnivoracious has more information on the short list and the prize itself.
  • It’s official–the fifth book in Jeff Kinney’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series is set to hit bookstores this November, and the cover will be purple.  That’s about all the information we have right now, though Kinney told ShelfLife, “This book is the linchpin in the series.”  If you haven’t read the first four, go to the bookstore, library, or your child’s bookshelf and get reading–you’re never too old for this series.
  • Justice was served in New York earlier this week, when Mount Vernon staff returned George Washington’s seriously overdue book to a New York library–the book, The Law of Nations by Emer de Vattel, was checked out by the former president on October 5, 1789. The current library staff realized the book was missing while doing inventory earlier this year, and they calculated theoretical late charges of $300,000.  Staff at Mount Vernon were able to replace the book, and they presented it to the library in a ceremony on Wednesday.  (They didn’t have to pay the late fees.)  The Guardian and New York Daily News have more details.
