The Bologna Children's Book Fair 2010 - just one more reason to go into children's publishing.

The Bologna Children's Book Fair 2010 - just one more reason to go into children's publishing.

  • Once a year, the frequently strapped-for-cash publishing industry gets to be gluttonous at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.  This year’s fair (which ran from March 23-26th) left the industry feeling optimistic, especially after financial worries made many publishers skip the event in 2009.  This year, attendance was high and a recent boost in sales had many publishers in good moods.  Publishers Weekly gives a full report of the event and notes the continued strength of young adult sales: “Teen books were still unquestionably the hottest category at Bologna, with a number of big-ticket series announced in the run-up to the fair, and with many stands showcasing new YA offerings.”
  • The 2010 Hugo Award nominees have been announced, with finalists listed in 16 different categories.  “Best Novel” nominees include Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, Wake by Robert J. Sawyer, The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi, The City & The City by China Miéville, Julian Comstock: A Story of 22nd-Century America by Robert Charles Wilson, and Palimpset by Catherynne M. Valente.  Omnivoracious has an exclusive interview with Valente, in which the author discusses the inspiration behind Palimpset and her shock at being nominated.
  • If April showers are getting you down, escape with a poem in honor of National Poetry Month!  The Academy of American Poets created National Poetry Month back in 1996, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate.  For teachers and librarians, Scholastic suggests activities by age group and offers printable poems and worksheets.  Everyone else can celebrate by receiving a daily poem from Poets.org.  Check out JacketCopy for more about the “Poem-a-Day” and poetry happenings throughout the month.
