Children's books for all of this weekend's festivities!

Children's books for all of this weekend's festivities!

With President’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year, and the Winter Olympics all happening this weekend, parents might find themselves answering a lot of questions!  That’s why we’ve dug up book recommendations for every subject, so you’ll be prepared when your child asks you to explain curling or name all of our country’s presidents.

PRESIDENT’S DAY

The teaching website Apples4theTeacher offers a slew of President’s Day-appropriate titles, including dozens of books on individual presidents (even relative duds like Rutherford B. Hayes are covered).  It also suggests some more general President’s Day books, like My Teacher for President and What Presidents Are Made Of.

VALENTINE’S DAY

For kids who can’t get enough hearts and chocolate, Kaboose recommends 21 children’s books about Valentine’s Day.  The recommendations are sorted by age group, from baby and preschool to 9-12, and there’s a short summary for each book.  Classics like Arthur’s Valentine and  Guess How Much I Love You make the list, but be warned–so does Barney’s Happy Valentine’s Day, featuring “All your favorite characters from the Barney TV show.”  You can pick and choose accordingly.

CHINESE NEW YEAR

There are several websites that recommend kids’ books about Chinese New Year, but Apples4theTeacher is up-to-date and gives thorough information on each title.  Several books discuss the holiday’s history and traditions, while others, like Chinese New Year for Kids, give arts and crafts ideas and suggest ways to celebrate.

WINTER OLYMPICS

Can you name all 15 sports featured in the Winter Olympics?  Neither could we, but that’s where the books come in.  Children’s Literature discusses the Vancouver games and gives book recommendations that cover everything from figure skating to skeleton.  A few of the recommendations include Biathlon, Cross-Country, Ski Jumping, and Nordic Combined, Canadian Sports, and Girls’ Ice Hockey: Dominating the Rink.
