What took Nanny so long to return?
In today’s news, hear the latest e-reader gossip, discover Joyce Carol Oates’ favorite scent, and learn why it took 8 years for The Nanny Diaries sequel to hit stores. Overall, it’s information you can’t live without–enjoy!
- Joyce Carol Oates isn’t just entertaining when she’s writing fiction. With her latest novel, A Fair Maiden, released last week, the author took time to answer interview questions from the Guardian about her favorite smell, her most treasured possessions, love, and embarrassing moments. With quips like, “Super power! I was not aware that I had even an ordinary power,” the interview shows the humorous, humble side this super author miraculously maintains.
- First there was the Kindle, then the Sony e-reader. Now, the e-reader market has spawned a litter of new devices, many of which debuted at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Quill and Quire reports on the explosion of e-readers and discusses the challenges competitors will face, noting that the new e-readers “resemble the dozens of MP3 players that cropped up to compete with the iPod. And what happened to all of those, again?”
- Question: Which author duo turned down “a lot of money, enough that [they] would have been set” when initially asked to write a sequel to their 2002 bestseller? Answer: Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus of The Nanny Diaries. Right after the book’s success, McLaughlin and Kraus refused many offers to do a sequel, claiming that they “didn’t want to come back to Nanny unless [they] had something new to say about her.” Well, last month’s release of Nanny Returns implies that they found something new to say (or realized the insanity of turning down loads of money), and this weekend they chatted with Beatrice about the new book.
